Any suitors of Portia, a rich Italian heiress, must select from three caskets, of gold, silver or lead, the portrait which her father in his will promises her hand in marriage. Bassanio, a young Venetian, already loves Portia, but his spendthrift ways have left him without the means to woo her. Promising to help him, Antonio, his relative, a merchant of Venice whose "fortunes are at sea" in merchant shipping, borrows 3,000 ducats from Shylock, a Venetian Jew, in return for a strict bond which grants the money-lender a pound of flesh nearest Antonio's heart if the money is not returned within a fixed time.
The scene is set for an intense drama in which Portia and her maid take on male disguises, solve all problems and trick their wayward husbands.
Theatre Set-Up produce this famous comedy in the light of the HEBREW CABBALA TREE OF LIFE as they have found a correspondence between the characters of the play and this ancient mystic system, well known in Shakespeare's day.

The play is costumed in VENETIAN CARNIVAL-STYLE dress with music by MOZART played on a harp.

WHAT THE PAPERS SAY:

The PLAYS are presented by this TOURING SHAKESPEARE THEATRE COMPANY in full PERIOD COSTUME in many of Europe’s MOST BEAUTIFUL VENUES IN NINE COUNTRIES in the same minimalist style as his company The King’s Men from May - September.

Theatre Set-Up has a unique knowledge of Shakespeare’s plays through Ph.D. Research which discovered the play’s SECRET MEANINGS. Through understanding the ESOTERIC IN SHAKESPEARE the artistic directors can solve the puzzling aspects of the plays and actors can perform with true meaning, giving audiences a vigorous, realistic portrayal of the characters they are playing.

IF IT RAINS most venues have INDOOR alternatives but PERFORMANCES CONTINUE REGARDLESS OF WEATHER.

One-hour long CELEBRATIONS with Elizabethan dances, songs and acted scenes from Shakespeare’s comedies suitable for WEDDINGS and other events are available at weekends throughout the year.
